Natural gas is extracted from onshore or offshore areas known as fields. Natural gas is brought safely to the surface, processed, and transported to businesses to put to work generating electricity, producing methanol and fertilizer, heating your local swimming pool and a raft of other purposes.
Natural gas in New Zealand is sourced exclusively from fields in the Taranaki region. The offshore Pohokura field is the largest current producer, and the onshore Kapuni field is one of the oldest producing fields. As all natural gas is sourced from the Taranaki region, it’s only available in the North Island. Get in touch to see if we can supply to your area.
Safety is at the heart of everything we do at OnGas. We maintain the highest safety standards through the combined efforts of producers, gas shippers and end consumers. Strict standards on gas composition and characteristics (such as odourisation and purity), ensuring correct supply pressure within pipelines, and proper maintenance and usage of gas appliances are all important parts of safe natural gas usage.
LPG is a manufactured product, created during the oil refining process. Natural gas, as the name implies, occurs naturally, usually alongside oil. In New Zealand, the other main difference is the way the two are delivered. LPG is transported in bottles and tanks, while natural gas is transported through a network of underground pipelines linked to the gas fields in Taranaki. For the user, a piped supply of natural gas provides the advantage of never running out, while the flexibility of bottled LPG means that it can be used anywhere in the country.
Step one is to check with your local gas network company that natural gas is available to your location. Once this has been established, you’ll need to provide certain connection details before works can begin. OnGas, as your natural gas retailer, can assist in this process.
Several factors will determine the length of time taken to finalise your connection, including the size and complexity of the connection, location etc. To speed up the connection process, it is important to have all relevant information assembled ahead of time, and engage with OnGas to assist with the process.
In both cases it is important to let us know as soon as possible. If you are closing your premises and want to cancel your supply, we can help to ensure that you minimise any disconnection costs. If you are moving premises, OnGas can help with the move and make sure that your supply is ready for you when you arrive at your new address.
OnGas allows for direct debit and direct payment of your bill.
Natural gas is measured in terms of the volume delivered, expressed in cubic metres. This measured volume is then converted to gigajoules for billing purposes. A gigajoule is a unit of delivered energy used in the gas industry, similar to kWh as used in the electricity industry. 1 gigajoule is approximately equivalent to 278 kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit of electrical energy used with your electricity supply.
No, our business is entirely dedicated to natural gas.
